From B-Boy to Believer: Discovering Spirituality through a Hip-Hop Book
As a B-boy for over a decade, I’ve been a fan of all types of Hip-Hop music, especially from the golden era of Hip Hop. A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, and the whole 9 yards.
However, another side of me often goes unnoticed — my undying love for books. So, imagine my excitement when I discovered that the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan, RZA, had published an autobiography called “The Tao of Wu.”

Little did I know that this one book from a “gangster rap group” would become a catalyst for my life-changing journey that transcended not only towards music and literature but also dance, art, creativity, and, quite unexpectedly — spirituality.
In this blog, I will be focusing on how this biography has completely changed my views on spirituality and how it may help you find your own spiritual path.
This biography has been an absolute game-changer for me, completely transforming my understanding of spirituality. Growing up in a Christian household, my exposure to anything outside of that was practically non-existent.
RZA dives deep into his life, experiences, and the profound philosophy that guides him. One of the central themes explored in “The Tao of Wu” is the concept of the Tao, a fundamental principle in Chinese philosophy. RZA beautifully connects the teachings of the Tao with the very essence of Hip-Hop, showing how he seamlessly weaves these principles into his artistic expression and personal growth.
As I turned the pages, RZA’s words resonated with me on a soulful level. He shares stories from his upbringing in Staten Island, New York, where he navigated the challenges of a tough environment. Through his personal triumphs and perseverance, he offers invaluable insights into the development of his unique artistic vision.
But what truly captivated me was RZA’s exploration of spirituality. He delves into various spiritual traditions and philosophies, such as Taoism, Islam, Buddhism, and much more. His anecdotes and reflections throughout the book shed light on his own path of spiritual exploration and growth.
Here are some key aspects of RZA’s spiritual journey:
- Seeking Knowledge and Wisdom: RZA demonstrates a deep thirst for knowledge and wisdom from an early age. He shares how he immersed himself in books, exploring various subjects such as philosophy, religion, and spirituality. This intellectual curiosity laid the foundation for his spiritual journey, as he sought to understand the deeper meanings of life and the universe.
- Influence of Eastern Philosophy: RZA’s exposure to Eastern philosophies, particularly Taoism and Buddhism, profoundly impacted his perspective. He learned and practiced the teachings of the Tao, finding resonance in its principles of balance, interconnectedness, and the cultivation of one’s true nature. These philosophies provided RZA with a framework to navigate his personal and creative life.
- Integration of Spiritual Practices: As RZA went full throttle into spirituality, he integrated various spiritual practices into his daily life. Meditation became a cornerstone of his routine, allowing him to find stillness, clarity, and a deeper connection with his inner self. He also explored the power of affirmations, visualization, and mindfulness as tools for personal growth and self-realization.
I never expected to be blown away by the world of spirituality, especially assuming the RZA only had a background as a straight-up gangster. But let me tell you, I was totally wrong.
RZA, to me, is a nerd, rapper, martial artist, fighter, producer, and believer in the truth.

He introduced me to the teachings of Buddhism, Five Percenters, Islam, Christianity, Taoism, and so much more. I mean, damn! RZA opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking and living. He showed me that spirituality isn’t limited to one path or belief system.
It’s about finding wisdom and truth wherever it may be.

I want to share with y’all the foreword from the book. It was written by Sifu Shi Yan Ming, founder and Abbot of the USA Shaolin Temple.
This has got to be the sickest foreword ever.
Sifu Shi Yan Ming shares a bit about his own background, having grown up in the Shaolin temple as a warrior monk. He then recounts how he met RZA in 1995 and felt an instant connection. They communicated on a deeper level, discussing the Shaolin temple’s history, philosophy, music, film, and science. The RZA spoke very fast, but Sifu felt like he understood every word — despite his lack of English skills.
“I had met many Americans by this time, but the RZA was different. He was American-born in the United States — but he had truly absorbed Buddhist and Taoist philosophies in his own way, with an open mind and an open heart.”
— Sifu Shi Yan Ming
He also praises RZA’s music as an embodiment of martial arts and philosophy, commending RZA’s deep understanding and how his philosophy permeates everything he says and does.
Drawing parallels to Buddhism, Sifu Shi Yan Ming likens the wisdom in “The Tao of Wu” to the floors of an exalted monk’s pagoda, representing continuous training and learning. He shares the messages he imparts at his temple and acknowledges that RZA already embodies those principles.
This heartfelt foreword beautifully captures the connection between RZA’s music, philosophy, and spirituality, as well as the profound impact he has had on Sifu Shi Yan Ming.
Basically, the Abbot of the USA Shaolin Temple is saying out of so many Americans he has met, RZA had that bond from the get-go as if they already knew each other from the Shaolin Temple.
Damn.
If you know anything about me, I’m not one for spoilers. But let me tell you, if you’re looking to dive headfirst into the realm of spirituality through the eyes of one of the most influential artists in the rap game, this book is the real deal.
So, if you’ll excuse me, I’m about to immerse myself in the profound practices of meditation, digging deep into the mystical realm of Supreme numbers, revisiting the timeless lessons of the Bible, and seeking enlightenment along the path of the Tao.
Big shout-out to the RZA for showing me the way.
Peace!
